Our Cows

The Galloway Breed

The Galloway is actually one of the oldest and probably one of the purest of our native cattle breeds. A very hardy animal and can live well off the poorest of land, which would have made them essential for our forefathers in the highlands or on fells and hill farms in northern England. The Galloway female is ideal for suckling and the breed produces excellent beefy calves. These days the old long established breeds like the Galloway are in much demand for their taste and texture, not to mention their superb creamy milk.

The increased interest being shown these days in native British cattle has made the Galloway a very popular breed, which will fit well into any system, be that a traditional Hill or Lowland farm.

Our cows are Belted Galloway's which come from Galloway in Scotland, and a breed called Blue Albion, a very old British Breed. You might say the original ‘blue cow' as they are blue. The calves are Limousine/ Belted Galloway crosses.

The Blue Albion is still a youngster but watch this space. We are very fortunate to live next door to one of only a handful of pedigree Blue Albion breeders in the country, which is where our heifer (female) calf came from. Both Margaret and Helen are very fond of the Blue Albions.
